The current Natural Parks of Peñalara and La Cuenca Alta del Manzanares (river Manzanares high basin) and other mountain spaces give origin to the future National Park of Guadarrama, which is located on the Macizo Central (central mountain mass), between the autonomous communities of Madrid and Castilla y León. It is a Special Protection Area for Birds.

The mountain mass of Peñalara, whose highest elevation is 2,434 meters, is on the North. Several glacier circuses and perfectly well-conserved small lakes can be seen at its feet. One can find La Pedriza on the South, an orange granite mountain mass which is the debut of most climbers from Madrid. Its irregular forms have inspired poets, writers and painters. Guadarrama is a place full of splendid natural corners where the forests and water reach small villages which still keep their old customs intact.
